Iglesia San Pedro Apóstol is one of around a dozen Catholic churches in Antigua.

Alfombra translates to carpet. During Lent, locals build and display their Alfombras in the cobblestone streets of Antigua.

While alfombras are created throughout the 40 days of Lent, the majority come to life on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The city swells from 50,000 to around 500,000 people.

Alfombras are generally made out of sawdust, flowers and pine needles.

Maundy Thursday and Holy Friday see a massive influx of spectators and worshippers. People come from all over Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Some will even sleep in parks and alleys just to catch a glimpse at the processions.
